Subspecies, varieties, forms and cultivars of plants belonging to the Haageocereus acranthus group

  • Haageocereus acranthus (Vaupel) Backeb.: has curving or upright columnar stems, densely covered by yellow-brown spines. It grows to 2(-3) m high. Central spines up to 2 cm long. Distribution: valleys of the Rio Rimac and Rio Lurin in the vicinity of Lima.
  • Haageocereus acranthus subs. olowinskianus (Backeb.) Ostolaza: has shorter stem (less than 1 m tall). Central spines up to 6 cm long. Distributiom: South of Lima in several restricted populations.
  • Haageocereus lachayensis Rauh & Backeb.: has golden yellow that year after year become almost black creating an extraordinary contrast of colours. Distribution: Lomas de Lachay, South of Huacho, Lima, Peru.
  • Haageocereus limensis (Salm-Dyck) F.Ritter: has thicker stems and longer spines (same as: subsp. olowinskianus?). Distribution: Eulalia Valley, Lima. Peru.
